How to Handle Orlando Weather: Heat, Cold, and Rain
One thing that’s certain about a trip to Orlando is the unpredictability of Florida weather. With a mix of sunshine, potential showers, and even the occasional cold snap, it’s essential to be ready for anything! Here are some tips for staying comfortable and making the most of your time in all kinds of weather.
🔥 THE HEAT 🔥
Stay Hydrated
Hydration is crucial in the Florida heat to keep you energized and focused on the fun! Buying water bottles at kiosks can add up quickly, so consider bringing a water bottle. Another option is to get a case of water delivered directly to your hotel. If you freeze your water bottle overnight, it’ll stay cooler in your bag throughout the day. For those who don’t want to carry a bottle, you can always get a cup of water for free at any counter-service restaurant.
Arrive Early
Getting to the park at opening allows you to check off major attractions before the heat peaks in the afternoon. Plan to take a break during the hottest part of the day by heading to an air-conditioned restaurant, lounging by the pool, or resting at your hotel.
Dress Comfortably
Wear moisture-wicking fabrics to stay cool, and if you’re in dresses or skirts, bring extra bike shorts to prevent chafing. Avoid wearing new shoes; pack a couple of comfortable pairs along with plenty of bandaids and moleskin for foot care. And don’t forget to bring cooling towels and handheld fans—they’re lifesavers in the summer heat!
Heat Must-Haves
-
Cooling Towels
GAME CHANGER. You will never see me at Disney in the heat without these.
-
Water Bottle Bag
I don’t like big bags in the parks and I recently changed out my belt bag for a water bottle bag and it changed my life.
-
Water Bottle
This is my go-to water bottle. I absolutely love it. It fits well in my water bottle bag.
-
Portable Fan
It does the job.
🌧️ THE RAIN 🌧️
Expect Rain - But Don’t Leave!
Florida rain showers tend to be brief, so stick around. When the rain subsides, crowds often thin out since many people leave. Rain showers can mean shorter lines and more space to explore, so don’t let a little rain stop you!
Eat or Shop During Rain Showers
Rainy times are perfect for grabbing a meal or checking out the shops. Plus, it’s an ideal excuse to indulge in a favorite Disney snack or find some souvenirs.
Bring Ponchos
Light, disposable ponchos are ideal for the afternoon rain showers that Florida is known for. They’re compact, easy to carry, and work wonders for covering a stroller or scooter when you’re inside an attraction. Universal also sells reusable ponchos if you’d like a sturdier option.
Quick Tip ✨: Be proactive! Cover your stroller or scooter if rain seems likely to avoid dealing with a soaked seat later.
Rain-Ready Footwear
Wet shoes and soggy socks can ruin the day fast. On rainy days, wear comfortable sandals that dry quickly and provide traction on slick surfaces.
Plan Afternoon Attractions
Save indoor attractions for the afternoon to beat the heat and dodge rain showers.
Pack Ponchos

Ponchos
Pack cheap disposable ponchos, because Universal ponchos are very overpriced!
❄️ THE COLD ❄️
Pack for Chilly Evenings
While Florida may not be known for cold weather, it can get chilly, especially from November through March. Bring a heavier sweater or jacket for those cooler nights. Since the days can still get quite warm, layering is your best bet.
Bring a Sweater or Long-Sleeved Shirt
Even if it’s hot outside, Universal’s indoor attractions and restaurants are often heavily air-conditioned. A light sweater or long-sleeved shirt will keep you comfortable when you step inside.
Forgot a Sweater? Shop at Universal!
If the temps drop unexpectedly or you’ve left your layers at home, Universal stores in the parks and resorts offer cozy options, including sweaters and blankets that can double as scarves or shawls.
