A Guide to Castaway Cay: Disney’s Private Island in the Bahamas

First thing’s first: cay is pronounced like key.
Be in the know.

Castaway Cay is Disney Cruise Line’s private island in the Bahamas, and for a lot of families, it ends up being the favorite day of the entire trip. You walk off the ship and straight into a beach day that feels relaxing, easy, organized, and still very Disney.

There are beaches for kids and adults, plenty of food included, activities if you want them, and enough lounge chairs and ocean views to make you immediately forget what day it is.

Whether your family wants to stay busy all day or just float in the water and eat soft serve, here’s what to expect at Castaway Cay and how to make the most of your day.

The Beaches at Castaway Cay

One thing Disney does really well on Castaway Cay is giving each beach area its own feel, so you can kind of choose your own version of the day.

Family Beach

Family Beach is the main beach area and where most people naturally end up first. It’s closest to the ship and has calm water, tons of lounge chairs, bright umbrellas, hammocks, and easy access to food and activities. They have built a sea wall that blocks out the waves and creates really calm waters, perfect for kids.

This is probably where you’ll want to be if your family plans to swim, snorkel, float, grab lunch nearby, and stay in the middle of everything happening on the island.

One little tip: if you want shaded chairs close to the water, it’s worth heading there fairly early because the best spots do fill up fast. But there will be plenty of chairs available all day long.

Serenity Bay

Serenity Bay is the adults-only beach for guests 18 and older, and it feels noticeably quieter the second you get there.

This is where you go if you want to read a book, nap in a hammock, float in calm water, or just exist peacefully for a little while without hearing splash contests happening nearby.

There’s also a lunch spot over there, beach bars, massage options, and sometimes fitness classes like yoga in the mornings.

If you’re cruising without kids or planning to use the kids club for part of the day, definitely make time for Serenity Bay.

Sports Beach

Sports Beach is more activity focused and great for older kids, teens, and families who don’t love sitting still all day.

This area has volleyball, soccer, tetherball, water rentals, and other activities if your family likes staying busy.

Things to Do on Castaway Cay

One of the best things about Castaway Cay is that your day can be as relaxed or as activity-packed as you want it to be.

Scuttle’s Cove Kids Club

Scuttle’s Cove is the kids club on Castaway Cay for ages 3 to 10, and it’s included with your cruise.

Disney counselors from the ship run everything, and kids can do crafts, games, water play, and themed activities throughout the day. There’s also a fun dig site called Monstro Point where kids can explore giant whale bones in the sand.

Lunch is included inside the club too, which is really helpful if parents want to book an excursion or spend time at Serenity Bay.

Port Adventures

If you want to add something extra to your beach day, Castaway Cay also has Port Adventures you can book for an additional cost.

You can parasail over the island, snorkel, take glass bottom boat tours, or try Castaway Ray’s Stingray Adventure, which is one of the most popular excursions. This experience lets guests feed, pet, and snorkel with stingrays while learning about them from marine specialists.

Character Meet and Greets

Characters pop up all over Castaway Cay throughout the day, usually wearing tropical outfits you won’t see anywhere else.

You might run into Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Pluto, Chip and Dale, Captain Jack Sparrow, and more.

Some appearances are listed in the Navigator app, but some just kind of happen while you’re walking around the island, which honestly makes it feel more fun and unexpected.

One of my favorite tips is to walk the island paths instead of always taking the tram because you’re way more likely to stumble into surprise character moments.

Teen Hideout

Teens ages 14 to 17 have their own space at Hideout, located near Sports Beach. It is designed as a no-adults zone where teens can relax, listen to music, and hang out with other cruisers their age. Activities for tweens and teens are listed in the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app.

The Castaway Cay 5K

If your family likes doing races on vacation, the Castaway Cay 5K is a fun little extra and it’s completely free. The course is clearly marked and winds through scenic parts of the island.

You can walk or run it anytime after getting off the ship, and the route winds through some really pretty parts of the island. There is no registration required. When you finish, stop by the bike rental hut to grab your medal because yes, there is a medal and yes, it’s worth it.

Dining on Castaway Cay

Lunch and nonalcoholic drinks are included on the island.

Family dining is available at Cookie’s BBQ and Cookie’s Too BBQ, where you’ll find barbecue food, salads, fruit, soft serve ice cream, and easy beach-day food everyone will actually eat.

If you’re spending the day at Serenity Bay, there’s also an adults-only lunch spot over there called Hangar 98 BBQ.

There are also smoothie stands, frozen drinks, cocktails, and bars all over the island. Olaf’s Summertime Freeze is always a hit with kids because of the Frozen-themed smoothies.

Shopping on the Island

There are a few little shops on Castaway Cay with island-exclusive Disney Cruise Line merchandise you can only buy there. You’ll find souvenirs, beachwear, pins, Bahamian gifts, and Castaway Cay specific merch people get weirdly attached to.

And you don’t need cash because everything gets charged back to your cruise account using your Key to the World card.

Cabana Rentals

If your family wants a more private setup for the day, Castaway Cay also has cabana rentals at both Family Beach and Serenity Bay. The cabanas come with shaded seating, snacks, drinks, towels, hammocks, and their own little relaxing setup away from the crowds.

They book FAST though, especially for repeat Disney cruisers with higher Castaway Club status, so if this is something you really want, make sure you try to reserve one as early as possible.

Helpful Tips for Your Castaway Cay Day

  • Bring your Key to the World card for everyone in your party. You will need it to get on and off the ship.

  • Eat breakfast onboard before heading ashore. Only lunch is served on the island.

  • Put sunscreen on before you leave the ship. The Bahamas sun is intense and sneaks up on people fast.

  • Pack light. Towels, life vests, and beach chairs are provided.

  • Water shoes or extra flip flops are a good idea because the walkways get HOT.

  • Check the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app for activity times, character locations, and Port Adventure details.

  • Walk when you can because you’ll usually spot more characters and fun little moments along the paths.

Why Families Love Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay is one of those places that makes beach days feel easy. There’s no transportation stress, no figuring out where to eat, no hauling a bunch of gear around, and no pressure to cram everything into one day. You can stay busy the entire time or spend the whole afternoon floating in the water and grabbing soft serve in between naps on a beach chair.

And that’s probably why so many families end up loving it so much. It feels relaxing in a way vacations don’t always manage to be.
